Couple of months back we already told you that Kawasaki has trademarked the name Kawasaki Ninja R2, and now we have confirmed information that the Ninja R2 will be anaffordable supercharged motorcycle placed in the middle weight category.
We estimate the engine capacity to be in the 700-800cc segment. This would mean the new Kawasaki Ninja R2 will take on the established litre class motorcycles while still being pretty much a middle weight displacement motorcycle.
The Ninja R2 could totally rewrite what a middle weight motorcycle can and should do.
In the current scenario, most cubic capacities are decided in such a way that they can be homologated to the various racing categories.
These are pretty standard numbers and all manufactures adhere to these to make sure their motorcycles can participate.
Now with the Kawasaki Ninja R2 having a supercharger there is no way it can compete against its naturally aspirated counterparts.
And with Kawasaki already having motorcycles in the respective race categories, it allows the company to be flexible with the engine capacity and any other conformation rules out there.
The best part is that this could also mean multiple versions in different engine capacities.
The current speculated engine capacity like we told you before is around the 800cc mark.
If you remember, at the last EICMA, Kawasaki President Kenji Tomida said that the whole supercharged H2 project was always intended to be scalable and suit other applications as well.
We know for sure that two of these applications are the SC-01 and SC-02 concept motorcycles that were showcased last year.
The existing H2 and the H2R almost made the current the range of litre class, track focused motorcycles look like overpriced kitchen knives while the H2 brothers showed you can do it all and more with a little bit of forced induction.
The Kawasaki Ninja R2 is expected to produce around 190 horses.
This means that Kawasaki can use lower spec components on the R2 to make it much more affordable than the H2.
Styling wise, the Kawasaki Ninja R2 will surely be very similar to the H2 with Kawasaki wanting to maintain a similar styling DNA for its supercharged series.
Our best guess is that we will be able to see the Kawasaki Ninja R2 announced only in 2017.
It would truly be a surprise to see the R2 at the EICMA this year, but given that the world is still reeling from the H2 effect, 2017 is still our best bet.
